Eminem
Divorce a Done Deal
by
Josh Grossberg
Oct
10, 2001, 1:30 PM PT
Slim
Shady can finally stop rapping about
killing his wife. He's no longer married.
A judge in Michigan has officially
granted Eminem's
divorce, closing the book on the
tumultuous on-again off-again marriage
between the trash-talking rapper
(otherwise known as Marshall Bruce Mathers
III) and his lyrically scalded sweetie,
Kim Mathers.
In addition to ponying up $1,000 a week
in child support (or a lump sum of $52,000
a year), Macomb County Circuit Judge
Donald G. Miller on Friday also ordered Em
and his ex to share custody of their
5-year-old daughter.
Despite a stormy marriage--during which
Mathers rhymed about murdering his other
half in the song "Kim"--the
divorce was actually settled amicably.
"It's always been Marshall's
desire that whatever happened would happen
in the best inerest of the child,"
Eminem attorney Harvey Hauer told the Detroit
Free Press. "He holds his child's
interest as paramount in all his decision
making relative to the issues of this
case."
In addition to hanging on to some
family values, the 28-year-old
Grammy-winner also is allowed to keep the
couple's $450,000 house in suburban
Detroit in exchange for writing Kim, 26, a
check for $475,000 to buy a new home.
While the two sides struck a
preliminary divorce
deal in March, last week's agreement
falls far short of the $2,740 a week in
child support initially suggested by the
Macomb County Friend of the Court.
But the judge's decree does take care
of some loose ends, namely divvying up
their "marital
estate"--including mortgages, life
insurance and other joint assets--and
Eminem's income from sources such as album
royalties, touring fees, merchandise and
promotional appearances.
The couple, who met in love in high
school, tied the knot in 1999. Em filed
for divorce just 14 months later.
A two-month stab at reconciliation
ended last March, with the missus filing
for divorce a second time. The two
were able to make nice long enough to
hammer out a deal over the custody of
their daughter.
An attorney for Kim Mathers declined to
comment on the settlement. |

CANCELS EURO TOUR
The terror attacks have led Janet
Jackson to scrap the European leg of
her much-plagued ''All For You'' tour.
''If anything happened to anyone on this
tour, I could never forgive myself,''
Jackson said in a statement released in
London. ''Like most people, the events of
Sept. 11 have troubled me enormously, and
I remain concerned about the foreseeable
future.'' She'll refund all tickets
purchased for the European tour, which was
to have run from October 31 to December
17. Jackson had already postponed several
American shows due to health problems
including a bout of flu and emergency
dental surgery.
Jackson is not
the only artist to cancel a European tour;
Weezer were supposed to visit the
continent next week but have also decided
to stay home. Blink-182, however,
will play in Europe in November as
scheduled. Major tours in the United
States are still on, including shows by Aerosmith,
Backstreet Boys, Bob Dylan, Maxwell,
Britney Spears (who is donating a
dollar from each ticket to the relief
effort), Rod Stewart, and U2,
who recently added 11 American dates and
sold them all out....

Kevin
Costner Returns to Durham, NC
The Associated Press
Friday,
Sept. 28, 2001; 1:01 a.m. EDT
DURHAM, N.C. –– Kevin Costner is
returning to Durham, some 12 years after
filming "Bull Durham" here.
Costner will be
the featured celebrity at the first
fund-raiser of the ALS Association
Carolina Chapter.
The Feb. 2 event
at the Carolina Theatre will honor Major
League Baseball's Jim "Catfish"
Hunter, a North Carolina native who died
in 1999 after battling amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis.
ALS, or Lou
Gehrig's disease, attacks specialized
nerve cells called motor neurons, which
control the movement of voluntary muscles.
Costner played
Crash Davis in 1988's "Bull
Durham." The character was inspired
by the actual Carolina League catcher of
the same name. Davis recently died at age
82 in Gastonia. |

Night Live Preps 'Emotional' Premiere
|
Saturday
Night Live returns this week, but
given the current political climate, you
probably won't see Will Ferrell doing his
dim-witted impression of President Bush.
Following somber
returns by comedy purveyors David
Letterman, Jay Leno, and Jon Stewart, the
long-running live show is also reassessing
its usual comedy arsenal.
Executive
producer Lorne Michaels said that the
comedy show's 27th season premiere will
acknowledge the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
"in an emotional way, because that's
the appropriate way."
Michaels told The
Associated Press, "All we can do is
focus on getting a show on Saturday that
addresses what happened with respect and
dignity and, at the same time, do a comedy
show that allows people some kind of
relief," he said.
Some SNL
staff members were forced out of their New
York City apartments because of the
attacks, and the show had to evacuate
briefly from its Rockefeller Center
studio, Michaels told The Associated Press
Wednesday.
None of the cast
members wanted to talk to the press about
what it's like to prepare for a show in
this atmosphere.
Reese
Witherspoon, star of this summer's comedy
hit, Legally Blonde is the guest
host. Alicia Keys is the musical guest.
Michaels had to
revamp the schedule when the Oct. 6 guest
host, Ben Stiller, backed out in the wake
of the attack. The third-week host, Dude,
Where's My Car's Seann William Scott,
was moved up a week, and Drew Barrymore
agreed to fill in Oct. 13.
Michaels says
that putting on the show "[has]
gotten a little easier each day. Last week
at this time it seemed impossible."

Britney
and Justin's Stolen Video Returned
|
The Florida beach house were lovey-dovey
teen pop stars Britney Spears and Justin
Timberlake were vacationing was burgled on
Saturday. Police in Destin, Fla.,
apprehended four teenagers who made off
with $5,000 worth of possessions,
including video equipment, liquor bottles,
and clothes.
Britney and her
'N Sync beau were out having dinner when
the burglary occurred.
Reportedly, none
of the stolen items, including a bottle of
Jack Daniel's, belonged to the two
underage stars.
However, one of
the alleged teen thieves was arrested
while trying to dub a stolen videotape
containing "personal" footage,
police say. And we know what you're
thinking was on that tape — oh,
something along the lines of a Pam
Anderson-Tommy Lee private moment? Tsk,
tsk. We would never think such
things about dear Britney. Whatever was on
the tape, police and publicists aren't
saying.
The 19-year-old
singer kicks off her tour in support of
her new album on Oct. 26 in Miami. She's
announced she will donate $1 from every
ticket to victims of the terrorist
attacks.
